The release of DayZ 1.21 introduced a new weapon that has caught the attention of players: the Crossbow. The crossbow is the most unique weapon added since the grenade launcher. It is also paving the way for bows to be a reality with its intricate projectile physics systems. In this post, we will break down how the crossbow works in terms of damage, range, and stealth, discuss the differences between the first three bolt types, and explain why players will want the crossbow in their loadout.
The crossbow is the first bow-like projectile launching weapon that has been added to DayZ. The updated version has five skins, with one being similar to the old version, which doesn't spawn yet(see above image), although it functions like the four other variants. These four variants spawn in hunting locations like shacks and castles, and anywhere Tundra or Blaze can be found.
The crossbow spawns with a fixed Picatinny rail system that allows the same optics that the LAR can attach: Baraka sights, ACOG 4x, ACOG 6x, Combat sights, RVN sights, and Starlight night vision optic. It is important to note that zeroing is based on the weapon that the optic is attached to, not the optic itself now. The main benefit of having an optic on the crossbow is that it provides an accuracy stat bonus.
The crossbow does a whopping 125 health damage at point-blank range, making it one of the most powerful weapons in DayZ in terms of damage. Each shot of the crossbow degrades it a very minor amount, and is heard at only 25 meters by players, but not at all by infected. However, infected can still hear the impact sounds of bolts hitting surfaces.
The crossbow has a fairly standard weight compared to other weapons and is a long weapon that will be difficult to use in close quarters. It is unusually shaped in the inventory at 28 slots, or 4 by 7, meaning it fits in high-tier jackets but attaches to the shoulder slot.
Now, let's talk about the three bolt types available. The first is the improvised bolt, which requires using a knife on a wooden stick to create one improvised bolt while removing around 3% of the knife's durability. The second type of bolt is the feathered improvised bolt, created by using one feather with one improvised bolt. Finally, the steel tip bolt is the third type, with the highest durability level, projectile speed, range and damage of the three, but is much rarer as it only spawns in hunting locations like the crossbow.
In conclusion, the crossbow has become a game-changer in DayZ 1.21. Its unique features, including its intricate projectile physics system, make it an appealing choice for players looking for a new weapon. The different bolt types offer varying levels of damage and range, and provide players with options. All in all, the crossbow is a must-have in your loadout if you're looking to explore the world of DayZ in the most stealthy way possible in the game.
