The chart below displays how the speed of a projectile slows down over distance in meters per second.
The distance the weapon selected crosses the white dotted line is the distance a weapon crack sound cannot be heard by the player you're shooting at.
It can no longer be heard by them because the weapon/ammo becomes subsonic under the white dotted line, and subsonic projectiles make no weapon crack sound.

The break action M79 Grenade Launcher that fires 40mm Chemical Gas Grenade Rounds. The Chemical Gas Round detonates on impact with any surface in DayZ and does not have a minimum safe distance. Once detonated, gas will emit in a small area around where the gas round hit. This gas will remain for a short amount of time and give players the deadly gas poisoning disease if they remain in the gas. However, because AI cannot get gas poisoning, it will drain their health slowly until they die instead. All projectiles fired from the M79 Grenade Launcher inflict damage similar to other weapons of DayZ and also drop off in damage like them too. Moreover, all 40mm Grenade Road types behave like bullets while in flight like any other firearm in DayZ.
The DayZ ballistics system processes the simulation of supersonic cracks to occur when a projectile is travelling faster than the speed of sound, which is around 344 meters per second(m/s). However, these supersonic projectiles lose speed due to air friction and become subsonic eventually.
While subsonic, a projectile will not carry the additional sound of a miniature sonic boom, otherwise known as a weapon crack or weapon snap. Instead, the projectile will only make a wizzing sound as it passes through the air at the target you're aiming it, making it much harder to detect where you are shooting from.
This chart was created to allow players to view the distances projectiles will no longer make a weapon crack/snap in DayZ to help them remain as stealthy as possbile when shooting targets at a distance. It was also created to explain why these loud gun cracks occur in the first place.
Weapons in DayZ can be split into serveral weapon categories that are as follows: Assault Rifles, Sniper Rifles, Sub Machine Guns, Rifles, Shotguns, Pistols and Projectile Firearms.
DayZ weapons have a lot of stats that impact how a weapon will react to different situations. These stats can be changed slightly or drastically by attaching attachments to your weapons in DayZ.
Rifles are long firearms that are powerful and can hit targets accurately at range. Making them a great choice stealthy players that like to shoot from a distance.
Shotguns are incredible dangerous up close, but lack in effectiveness at medium and especially long distance. Shotguns are best used in urban combat for this reason.
Handguns are compact firearms that can only be shot and handled with one hand. They are less powerful and accurate than rifles, but they are more concealable and portable. They are classified into several categories, including revolvers and pistols. While the cylinder of a revolver rotates in place of a magazine, the magazine of a handgun may hold a significant number of rounds.
