In this blog post, I'm going to break down the five stats that many players struggle to understand in DayZ: Hunger, Thirst, Temperature, Blood, and Health. I'll explain how each of these stats affects the condition of our character, how they work together, and how they can be manipulated to our benefit.
Starting with Hunger and Thirst, these stats work together to regenerate our Blood stat. The amount of energy and hydration drained depends on how fast we are moving. When we are not moving, the base value is 0.01 per second, but when we sprint, it increases to 60 times more. What's important to note is that the more energy and hydration we have, the more we drain per second, up to a maximum of 100%. We can't change the rate of energy and hydration burned, so our weight or using the stamina enhancing epipen makes no difference. Once both our Hunger and Thirst stats are white or above, we regenerate Blood at 0.9 Blood per second.
Temperature also has a huge effect on our character's condition. Being too hot or too cold now punishes our characters even more. When our Temperature icon is red or dark blue, we take 0.15 health damage per second, killing us in 11 minutes from full health. Being red hot will also drain Water instead of Energy, draining 0.6 Hydration per second, and 0.45 Hydration per second when in the yellow. When in the light blue or dark blue, we lose 0.33 and 0.45 Energy per second respectively.
The Blood stat is the most complex of these five due to it being linked to Blood Pressure and the three bleed types of DayZ. Blood is the only stat that impacts the regeneration of our Health stat. When our Blood stat is low at 2500, we regenerate 0.005 Health per second, which increases the closer we are to 5000 Blood, up to a maximum of 0.03 Health per second. Low or high Blood doesn't change the Blood regeneration speed, so we can regenerate Blood and therefore Health faster indirectly using a Saline IV or Blood Bag IV. Having high or low Health doesn't have an effect on Blood regeneration either.
Finally, Health is the most important stat in DayZ due to it being the one that hits 0 the most often. As we lose Health, our Run speed gets slowed, reducing our Jog speed by 14% and Sprint speed by 7% when our Health icon is yellow, and -30% speed when red for both. Flashing red gimps us the most, reducing our Jogging speed by 56% and Sprinting speed by 70%. We can't climb or jump when in this stage either, but we can still vault over small fences and pick up heavy items. Unlike Blood, we ALWAYS regenerate Health, regardless of our other stats.
I hope this blog post has helped to clarify the five stats in DayZ and how they work together. Knowing how to use these stats to your advantage is critical in order to survive in the treacherous virtual world of DayZ.
